movies

We usually show our films in the evening of the third Sunday of the month at the Skidompha Public Library in Damariscotta, Maine (enter from the rear).  Consistent with our intention to "keep current", the film schedule is not made up more than 1 to 2 months in advance - see below.   Movies are listed in all area newspapers during the week before the showing. Call or e-mail Paul Kando 207 563-5487 kando@lincoln.midcoast.com for information and suggestions.

"THE GLOBAL BANQUET: POLITICS OF FOOD"

Much is being said about corn ethanol's deleterious effects of food supplies and prices. And rightly so. However the problem has deeper roots. This film explores the politics of global food security, which is threatened by the policies and practices of giant international food producers, trade and financial institutions and governments around the world.

Part 1, Who is invited? deals with the impact of free market fundamentalism on food production and distribution. Part 2, What's on the menu? focuses on low cost and genetically modified crops, short terms profiteering, land management, environmental impacts, biopiracy, animal cruelty, cheap farm labor and the stress on the family farm.

The worldwide food situation is critical, yet disaster is not inevitable. Unjust and misguided policies can be rewritten -- if we get together, insist, and do our part.

Discussion will follow.

CONA programs are free and open to everyone. We pass a hat to cover expenses.
